Today, hypostasis and ousia have different meanings but, according to my analysis of the data, they had very similar meanings when Hebrews was written. Nevertheless, nobody, to my knowledge, spoke of God's "substance," as we understand the term today materialistically, before Hebrews was written. Can you explain (in layman's terms) why you jump from hypostasis to substance?
Jul 29, 2023 at 9:26 comment added Andries Sorry for the late comment - I have been thinking about the "core issue" during the Arian Controversy. You define it as about homoousios. But if you read Arius and Alexander, one does not see that as an important issue. It is merely one of the things Arius rejected. Alexander was also not comfortable with it. After Nicaea, nobody mentions homoousios for 20 years. It was brought back into the debate by Athanasius and 'legitimized' by Basil of Caesarea. So, I would hesitate to say that homoousios was the core issue, unless qualified a bit. - Just a thought.

Those h sounds at the beginning are rough breathing marks if you want to use diacritics; the eta: η just happens to be in the same place as our h on the keyboard (mine anyway).
