a prophet of the late 7th C BCE, and one of the books of the "Minor prophets" (also known as the Book of the Twelve, or XII).

Zephaniah was active during the reign of Josiah (640-609 BCE), and thus a predecessor of Jeremiah. Although a brief book, it exhibits the structure of its more substantial counterparts, roughly:

  • beginning with oracles of woe (ch. 1);
  • a set of oracles against foreign nations (ch. 2); and
  • moving towards anticipation of restoration (ch. 3).

cf. Isaiah 1-39, LXX-Jeremiah, Ezekiel.
