David, son of Jesse, was selected to be the king to succeed Saul.

David is well-known for his defeat of Goliath when he (David) was a boy, for his military victories as a man, and for the power and prominence he gained for Israel as its king. David is also known for his adultery with Bathsheba and his subsequently bringing about the death of her husband Uriah.
