49 Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f] 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

[f] or "be about my Father’s business"

As far as the specific text of Luke 2:49, 50 is concerned,

  • the oldest copy of the Greek text is Codex Sinaiticus from about 350 AD
  • the oldest translation, into Old Latin, is Codex Palatinus from about 350 AD
  • the passage is also quoted by Iranaeus in his book, "Against Heresies", book 1, Chap. XX sect. 2, written about 180 AD.

  • +1 but Papyrus 75 is earlier still. It contains most of Luke but I do not know if it contains this section. Commented May 5 at 23:09
  • @DanFefferman - you are quite correct, P75 is older (about 200 AD) but it only contains Luke 3:18–24:53 + John 1–15. That is, it lacks Luke 2:49, 50.

  • Does P75 not have the verses because the papyrus is damaged, missing there? Or the verse appears to not exist yet?

  • Pardons, I was referring to P4, not P75

  • P75 does not have the verses because it is damaged and several pages have disintegrated. P4 is similar - all we have left is Luke1:58-59; 1:62-2:1; 2:6-7; 3:8-4:2; 4:29-32, 34-35; 5:3-8; 5:30-6:16. It was written some time around 200 AD.
