Leviticus 11:27

Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

Are cats and dogs unclean animals?

  • Kasher כָּשֵׁר / Kosher animals apply to consumables (food). Cats & Dogs are not "fit" (כָּשֵׁר) for human consumption. Jul 8 at 12:59

Yes - cats and dogs are unclean animals by the definition in Lev 11:26, 27 -

Every animal with hooves not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you. Whoever touches any of them will be unclean. All the four-footed animals that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening

Since dogs and cats:

  • have no divided hoof (they do not even have a hoof)
  • they do not chew the cud
  • they walk on paws rather than hooves

... dogs and cats are unclean animals and so cannot be eaten as food because they are unclean.

Lastly, the prohibition against touching unclean animals applies only to their dead bodies or "carcasses".

Under the law, cats and dogs WERE unclean. As Acts 11:9, the scripture speaks of the cleansing of all animals.

  • The scripture never speaks of the cleansing of all animals. Peter's dream applied, not to animals, but to people: specifically, the Gentiles. The Jews had always viewed the Gentiles as "unclean," and would not even eat with them. God used the dream of the unclean animals to illustrate His message, and when Peter saw the Gentiles waiting to invite him to their home just after that dream, he understood the message. If God had actually changed His health laws, He would have made it clear to the church as a whole, such as via the Jerusalem Council as with circumcision. But this never happened.
