Oct 25, 2021 at 13:50 | comment | added | TylerH | "the statement that “all Cretans are liars” must be a lie, which would mean all Cretans tell the truth" This is incorrect logic. Some Cretans may be liars even if all Cretans are not. This is a false dichotomy that is used to deny the antecedent (both are logical fallacies).
Oct 25, 2021 at 13:36 | comment | added | Nick Matteo | @Joshua: the negation would still be "not all Cretans have the nature of being a liar," or equivalently "at least one Cretan does not have the nature of being a liar."
Oct 25, 2021 at 3:22 | comment | added | Joshua | @NickMatteo: How about "All Cretans have the nature of being a liar." rather than "All Cretans lie every single time."
Oct 24, 2021 at 20:21 | comment | added | Barmar | Not to mention that a liar doesn't always lie -- if you call someone a liar, you're usually referring to a particular statement they made. And non-liars may sometimes lie.

Oct 24, 2021 at 17:26 | comment | added | Ray Butterworth | @JamesK, it's not prejudice to say that Chinese have an epicanthic fold, or that Jews don't eat pork, or that English like fish'n'chips. Prejudice would be seeing an English individual, and assuming that they must like fish'n'chips. Observing statistically significant common characteristics of a group is not prejudice; applying those values to individual members of that group is prejudice.
Oct 24, 2021 at 7:29 | comment | added | James K | Its still prejudice to consider that "ethnic group X" always shows positive characteristics. Saying "Scots have a Presbyterian work ethic" could be as prejudiced as Paul saying "Cretans are liars". What about Scots Catholics? Are they by implication lazy and spendthrift?
Oct 23, 2021 at 20:42 | comment | added | Ray Butterworth | "all Scottish people are tight-fisted". Actually it comes from Presbyterian work-ethic, and so traditionally Scots tended to know the real value of things (the labour it took to produce them). That means they wouldn't want to under-pay either (that would be cheating the seller), but that part of it is neither funny nor offensive, so it's ignored. "Scotch tape" is so called because 3M saved money by putting sticky only near the edges of the tape. In Canada Sandy MᶜTire has symbolized good value for over 60 years.
