Oct 1, 2020 at 11:44 | comment | added | Ruminator | If one goes to this page: biblehub.com/commentaries/expositors/lamentations/4.htm and searches for "In the first place" you get to a very relevant commentary, supportive of your view. You might want to add it to your answer. But regardless, I'm marking this as the answer. The other commentaries suggest guilt from false prophets but IMHO misses the point. This commentary rightly suggests these are the temple leadership and cites Jeremiah 4 multiple times. Anyway, thanks.

This one may take some time to parse out but I think it will be rewarding. Thank you so much for your answer, though it is more like a big clue at the moment.

Sep 11, 2020 at 2:57 | comment | added | Ruminator | Do you have access to Lam. Rabbah in the original language to be able to answer my last question: Any chance they were thinking, "For sins against the prophets" rather than "by"?
Sep 11, 2020 at 2:33 | comment | added | S. Broberg | true about Lam. Rabbah. It doesn't prove anything but it is always interesting to find a later Jewish writing that so closely reflects a New Testament writing. Also, I'm sure Lamentations became a very important book after 70 AD as events of 586 BC were playing out again.
Sep 11, 2020 at 2:15 | comment | added | Ruminator | This would be more compelling if the Lamentation Rabbah were older but still strong evidence of a similar line of thought. +1 and thank you very much, S. It would be unthinkable that the survivors of the Shoah of 70 AD would not search for a "why" for such a disaster. Apparently prominent voices were saying, "Because of the sins of the prophets, for shedding innocent blood". Any chance they were thinking, "For sins against the prophets" rather than "by"?
