Apr 26 at 18:23 | comment | added | Luke Sawczak | Incidentally, what is a name and what is a title? In the West we have the odd scenario that most people's names are etymologically opaque -- we've lost the connection to their original meanings. Many cultures have transparent names that are just descriptors. If you're Mr. Smith, is that a name or a title? Is Israel ("he wrestles with God") a name or a title? The sense and reference are usually confounded in ancient names.

Aug 3, 2018 at 17:51 | comment | added | Luke Sawczak | A mysterious reading might be that God is actually trying not to reveal himself - he refuses to give them any more detail than the assurance that he exists. Why? Maybe because the question "What's his name?" is supposed to challenge him, the way you might ask for a detail from someone you think is lying, and God doesn't want to play that game. Or maybe he wants them to just exercise faith without certainty. I don't know which reading is best - maybe it's a bit of everything...
Aug 3, 2018 at 17:48 | comment | added | Luke Sawczak | @HollyAllen There are many options for what to call him - one of my favourites is Jesus' "Abba", Father. :) Here, people often read this particular name as a revelation of a deep mystery about God's nature -- he is "existence" itself, or he is best identified as a "being" since nothing more specific can capture him. I think that sort of reading comes from the association with YHWH, which seems to be the same verbal root

Aug 3, 2018 at 16:45 | comment | added | Holly Allen | It seems like most of the "names" we call God are titles rather than names? There is power in his name so it seems very important to know what to call him. Any more thoughts on this? I wish I could read hebrew
