The words often translated to "good & evil" is more closely related to the concepts of "pleasure & pain." Thus, should we accept the interpretation in your question, we should see this as, "people ought not focus on pleasures and pains." (I use "ought not" because Qal verbs are imperatives given for our own sake, not commands we are punished for breaking.)
