I like translating the Hebrew of the Bible, and I think it can be done accurately and honestly, better than extant translations, so long as you ignore the theologically minded people completely. They generally are not honest enough, you can't trust anything they say.

I used a "helpmate complementing him" which I think is closest.

comment What does “Jealous” mean in Exodus 34:14?
Are Ghayoor and Kana cognates? It might be Gana, Ganar, Ghayoor, but if the G is a guttaral, like "ayin" I have a hard time imagining the transformation. Is there a proto-semitic reconstruction?

comment Is there a modern English translation of the Bible that uses the second-person plural pronoun?
@MonicaCellio: It will bother you, I'll make up a passage: The Amorites have risen, and Israel's daughters are taken captive, their tears upon their hem. Their tears like water down a stream. Their eyes redden, and they call to God: God, awaken from your slumber and release us from captivity. Our hopes have faded. And God answered them, saying "I have heard y'all, and I shall release yous's chains".

comment What is the evidence for the existence of the Q document?
This might be better asked on skeptics--- I don't know if there is hermeneutics related to this. The Hebrew gospels and the Church in Jerusalem are related--- they are based on Q-documents, if this document exists.

comment Is there a modern English translation of the Bible that uses the second-person plural pronoun?
@MonicaCellio: One could use you (italics) for God consistently, and this might be ok. I am wary of this because of the two or three places where the pronoun is not for sure God.

comment Is there a modern English translation of the Bible that uses the second-person plural pronoun?
@MonicaCellio: Oh, good point! I did not consistently do the capitalization thing in regard to God, because there are some places where you aren't sure about whether the pronoun refers to God or not, and I wanted to preserve the ambiguity.

comment What does it mean for someone to be another person's “portion”?
This is not a good answer, the two notions are in no way synonyms, if you speak any Hebrew. The words and roots are not related, and the notion of "portion" is more idiomatic. Also, it is really annoying when a person lets their faith or theology impose a wildly anachronistic meaning to earlier Hebrew texts that had absolutely no notions of afterlife, and in no way anticipate the later Christian writings (except inasmuch as the septuagint version prophecies are fulfilled by Christ). You should not let your dogmas interfere with your honest readings of text.

@ErelSegalHalevi: Reading your profile, is it possible that you could chat me at linguistics.stackexchange? I am trying to parse natural language, and you might know the literature and tell me if my approach is new.
