@Sarah I should have stated that in my response, just edited it.

@Sarah I wasn't intending this to be the accepted answer, I just wanted to add some additional perspectives. I think Mike has the best answer.

Sure, deleted my comments since this was getting lengthy.

comment Does Peter intend to identify the Pauline Epistles as canonical?
I think the concept of 'canonicity' is something we're reading back into the text. I don't think they thought about which books were 'in' or 'out' as much as later thinkers, as is evidenced by the myriad of deuterocanonical and apocalyptic works they accepted and quoted.

Hey Maxwell, thanks for the answer. Please note that a 'signature' is not necessary as your username is always shown with your answer.

comment What were the major objections that Augustine had with Jerome's translation of the Hebrew Bible?
It looks like I may need to chime in here, just haven't had the time. But this is a fascinating bit of history - I've had the privilege of reading the letters Augustine and Jerome wrote back and forth (all free online of course).

comment Was the word ἐπιούσιον used prior to the Lord's prayer? What does it mean?
I'm interested in how he came to that meaning. Please share the process of how these conclusions were made - particularly the meaning of the word itself. I'm not following the logic in this response....

I also noticed that @JonEricson left your last statement mostly intact, yet you removed it. I happen to agree with that last statement (although not the 'tone' in which it was delivered), so I'm also going to add it back in with a slight explanation so that it comes off less as an accusation and more as an explanation. PLEASE review it to ensure I have captured your original intent.

comment “the first day of the week” in 1 Corinthians 16:2
@Sarah I am contemplating deleting this answer. It is a crap argument and doesn't answer the question. I just thought it would be an interesting point to consider. Concerning week and Sabbath - it's all context, not number. Number wasn't added until much later, so it's purely speculative. Is it possible? Sure. Likely? No.

comment What can we infer about archangel(s) from the text of the Bible?
Moulton and Milligan also have a good explanation, their lexicon can be found online for free at archive.org/details/vocabularyofgree00mouluoft - see p. 80ff (direct link: archive.org/stream/vocabularyofgree00mouluoft#page/80/mode/2up).

That would really be another question altogether as it has more to do with the language, but I'll post some references here in chat: an authority figure who initiates activity or process, ruler, authority (Aeschyl., Thu. et al.; ins; pap, e.g. PHal 1, 226 μαρτυρείτω ἐπὶ τῇ ἀρχῇ καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ δικαστηρίῳ; Gen 40:13, 21; 41:13; 2 Macc 4:10, 50 al., s. I probably could have written a book on this, I know there are A LOT of doors that I opened but didn't close, but after spending way too many hours on this that I should have spent on sleep, I decided that this answer will need to be sufficient as is.

comment Who were among the greatest evangelists in the bible?
Hello @AndrettiMilas and welcome to Biblical Hermeneutics! Biblical Hermeneutics is a question and answer site for anyone who wants to know what a Biblical text means (exegesis) using the techniques or rules of interpretation (hermeneutics). This question is very vague and may not be a good fit for our site depending on what you are asking. It may be a better fit for Christianity.SE, but it is hard to tell when it is so vague. Please comment here and help me understand so that we can ensure your question gets answered optimally. Again, welcome!

comment What does John 12:40 mean?
I should mention that it is very important in my tradition to see what the Patristic consensus is on a given passage before attempting to interpret it on my own. That's the reason for the extensive footnotes
