Who was a greater king: Hezekiah or Josiah? Ask any kid, Josiah beats Hezekiah hands down! |

Is Matthew 13:18-23 specific to Matthew's congregation? Asked it on Christianity.SE because it probably is too broad to ask here. |

Is Matthew 13:18-23 specific to Matthew's congregation? Yeah, that's something I really want to know the answer to. I don't think I could ask my parish priest without sounding like I'm picking a fight, but he keeps on bringing up all this stuff especially cultural relativism with respect to Eph 5:21 (which incidentally was the Mass reading this weekend) |

Is Matthew 13:18-23 specific to Matthew's congregation? I think he said that He didn't explain them because they had different meanings and Jesus probably told the same parable quite often while preaching but only one instance would naturally be recorded in the Gospel. He said that this explanation was given to solve the problems of a particular group, but even the explanation is not the only explanation. I can buy that , I just wonder if he really meant "Jesus didn't actually say that". I wish i could remember to ask him. |

Is Matthew 13:18-23 specific to Matthew's congregation? Have you ever heard of the notion that Jesus didn't explain His parables? The priest in my parish is the only one I've ever heard say this, but he says it year after year. |

How did Jesus say “Unless the marriage is unlawful”? That was a good answer and thanks for all the context! As far as satisfying my initial curiosity about the parentheses you're basically saying that since Jesus didn't actually say it at that time, He didn't have to say it under His breath? |

How did Jesus say “Unless the marriage is unlawful”? @swasheck I think this is the definition I use, I've never tried to define the word before though. |

How did Jesus say “Unless the marriage is unlawful”? @MonicaCellio I thought it was, but now that I'm researching a bit, I guess it's contested. It's not even punctuated with parentheses in all translations, but it's clearly a "parenthetical" remark, even it there is no parentheses. I just wonder what that would sound like proclaimed from a hilltop. |

How did Jesus say “Unless the marriage is unlawful”? @MonicaCellio I put the Greek in there, I don't understand it. I see there are parentheses, but I don't know what a literal translation would be. Does this matter if one holds to the notion that Matthew was originally written in Aramaic? |
