I don't think I could ask my parish priest without sounding like I'm picking a fight, but he keeps on bringing up all this stuff especially cultural relativism with respect to Eph 5:21 (which incidentally was the Mass reading this weekend)

I think he said that He didn't explain them because they had different meanings and Jesus probably told the same parable quite often while preaching but only one instance would naturally be recorded in the Gospel. He said that this explanation was given to solve the problems of a particular group, but even the explanation is not the only explanation. I can buy that , I just wonder if he really meant "Jesus didn't actually say that". I wish i could remember to ask him.

As far as satisfying my initial curiosity about the parentheses you're basically saying that since Jesus didn't actually say it at that time, He didn't have to say it under His breath?
