@MatthewMiller please know that it's not just you. if you dont think that the answer contributes then you dont have to +1. i've just lost the target for the site, i guess.

then ok, but please don't accuse me of wild speculation when you've already established quite the pattern of stump-the-chumps sort of questions that are designed for speculation.

@MatthewMiller this will be my last comment here. I find it laughable that you choose to pick on specific words that I've used, and yet you race off into some sort of wild, typological explanation. You also upvoted an answer that is only tangentially-connected inasmuch as it is Paul who wrote it. I only said "it is not inconceivable" because there is no way to know for sure. As I said in my answer, this kind of question leads to all the wrong kinds of speculation. But if you want to deny historical documentation of famines

@MatthewMiller I am still curious, though, as to whether or not you think that there is an answer that reaches beyond what Paul states. It seems to me like you've upvoted a question that is even more speculative than this one. I'm not asking you to accept mine, I'm just asking you to rethink the bias that you've brought to any possible answer.

Ok that's fair. I guess I was just supplementing the answers that were already rooted in Pauline literature. It's less about speculation and more about using historical context.

Thanks for the feedback. Is there a place where you believe I speculate too much, over against the natural speculation inherent to the question itself?

I like your answer if you just remove that last paragraph/sentence. I agree with it, but do not necessarily find it compelling evidence to support the initial proposition.

comment How should ἐκκλησίαις be translated in 1 Corinthians 14:34?
for all the heat this question has generated, i'm just glad that nobody committed the etymological fallacy of digging too far into calling them "called out ones."

I agree with you until the example. I agree that it's either for clarity or emphasis, but nothing suggests that Paul is choosing to focus on the specific Corinthian church(es).

So you're saying that it's a literary device ... we'll call it, "irony."
