I am a web programmer by day (PHP) and work on sermons and teaching material in the evenings.

I attended Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, Missouri, for a Master of Arts in Theological Studies and a Master of Divinity. I am an associate pastor at a small church in Iowa. While in seminary, my emphasis was on Old Testament studies, but Dr. Wave Nunnally introduced me to the rabbinics. Those have become a special interest as well.

I also enjoy apologetics and was a very active member of the apologetics.org forum before it went defunct.

comment Why does the Scripture say that Abraham sacrificed his “only-begotten son”?
@JonEricson, I know people like that. But God's humor is everywhere. So is Jesus'. I once estimated the amount of money owed by the unjust steward in Matt 18:24ff. He owed multiple times more money than the entire region paid in taxes to Rome in a year. And Jesus says (with a perfectly straight face, I imagine), "and as he could not pay..." Snort! Chortle! Leg slap! Then there's the rabbinic idiom for "dumbfounded" I found in Genesis Rabbah. A Samaritan challenges R. Jonathan with a dumb question. "And at that moment, all of R. Jonathan's learning in law left him."

Most people I've talked to don't realize there is humor in the Talmud. I have had literal LOLs at times (like the above).

comment Are there intra-textual supports for a politicized reading of Revelation?
"By connecting passages to historical events," do you mean that he believes it all happened in the first century or that he believes Revelation has been being fulfilled over the course of history since?

comment Did Jesus wear pants?
Question reminds me of a sermon clip a friend sent me. The preacher spent several minutes on the topic "Real men pee standing up." I was in shock (the bad kind). My friend had been equally horrified.

comment Why did the witnesses lay their coats at Paul's feet?
The average Roman, I might agree, but I believe part of Luke's purpose is a legal defense for Paul's upcoming trial. Luke leaves off with Paul about to make his defense. Since Luke shows several times how Christians are willing to pay the ultimate price for their faith, it seems odd that he would write it after Paul died and not show that. If Luke-Acts was first written with the purpose of explaining to Theophilus (who seems to be an official of some kind) what Christians mean and do, we could expect Theophilus to know how Jews act. After all, Theophilus means "lover of God."

There is a running tension in Acts between Greek and Hebrew Jews. I'll edit to include more details.
