The birthdate I entered is farcical, as I prefer not to identify myself in any way publicly online, but the age is in the ballpark.

comment Why did John take Mary, who was married, into his home?
@Ryan Jesus didn't always obey the Jewish law. He broke it on many occasions which is part of what got him in trouble with the Pharisees. He always obeyed God's law. What part of God's law would such an action violate?

@LanceRoberts I think you are right. Jesus, both as the firstborn of Mary, and simply as the Lord, certainly had the right to delegate this responsibility, even if he had other living siblings.

comment Does John 7:15 mean Jesus was untaught?
I would translate this verse: The Jews were shocked. They said, "How does he know the Scriptures? He never studied ⸤to be a rabbi⸥. (If the there is a character which is not rendering correctly before to and after rabbi, those are lower square brackets, which I use to denote an inserted phrase. If you are running Windows your font may not show them.)

@lonesomeday John's attitude towards Jesus (for example, at his baptism) makes that seem extremely unlikely.

comment Is there any scriptural warrant for the literalist approach to scripture?
Perhaps the months of silence without an answer to this question is a bad sign for the literalist position...

@Ryan I see what you're saying, but what does it mean when it talks about Jesus' brothers, then? That they were his cousins? (What we would call cousins are called brothers in some cultures.) Or might it be that John was closer to Jesus than his brothers (they come off as jerks sometimes), and so he would rather entrust his mother to John's care?

comment What translation best translates the word “vanity” (in the KJV) in Ecclesiastes?
Yes, I mean the Hebrew. I don't believe it is linguistically accurate to claim that a word carries all its meanings or even connotations of all its meanings in all contexts.

comment What translation best translates the word “vanity” (in the KJV) in Ecclesiastes?
I'm not sure it's linguistically sound to confute the definitions of vanity. That is, I do not believe that the concern for appearance definition informs the meaningless definition. Also you don't give evidence from the original language for your take on how the passage should be translated.

@GalacticCowboy Both, really, but more with Greek.

comment What is the third heaven that Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 12:2?
I've looked at both references twice and I'm still not sure what subset of those passages you are referring to. Would you mind adding quotations from them to your answer?

comment Meaning of “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”
I read the Greek text for 26-28, and though I have an appreciation for idiomatic translation, the Message has taken too much freedom with these verses to be of use in discussing their meaning. It may or may not be a correct interpretation, but that the passage means what the Message gives it to mean must be demonstrated from another source than the Message.

comment Meaning of “Body of Flesh” in Colossians 2:11
I would give an extra +1 for the C.S. Lewis connection if I could. I have often found that Dawn Treader metaphor very helpful but had not thought about in connection with this passage.

My friends had told me about the NET Bible, but I had never taken the time to look into it—looks like it would be worthwhile!
