comment Psalm 51:5 CEV vs ESV
I'm no scholar, but [comparing translations][1] gives a vast majority favoring some variation on "conception." I didn't look at them all, but the only other translation I saw using "birth" was the NCV. And I am trying really hard to format this link correctly, but it just ain't happening. comment Psalm 51:5 CEV vs ESV
Correction to my messed up original comment: For my money, the CEV is a poor translation almost all the way through. If it is just a conflict between the ESV and CEV, I'll go ESV every time. Would be interesting to see what other translations say, particularly some of the more "modern" ones like NLT. I can't look it up right now. Better get back to work. I mess up alot.

comment Why does Jesus tell his mother his “hour has not yet come”?
I have read in a few sources that there is definitely a translation issue with "Woman." Apparently, in that time and place, this was a respectful form of address and did not sound the way it did to our modern ears. Jesus was not saying, "Leave me alone, woman!!!!" But regarding the main part of your question, I have never had a clue and am very eager to hear what others have to say. I give your question another upvote.

comment Is there any exegetical reason for believing the seven churches of Revelation correspond to seven successive “church ages”?
@Mike: I won't argue that you are wrong. Revelation is a hard book and who knows? Maybe you're seeing something that I never have. But "clear as day"??? Sorry, no. I need more argument, less assertion.

@Jas 3.1: Thanks, and understood. I obviously have my convictions (what some people refer to as "biases" -- Can you believe that???) but you should definitely hear all sides to the story.

@warren: Thanks for sprucing up my answer. Is there a link somewhere for how to do that with lists?
