comment Did Job repent?
Thank you for asking this; I learned something new about that verb in the course of looking for an answer.

comment How would stoning of an adulterer actually be carried out under the Law of Moses?
@J.C.Salomon interesting. Sanh. 6 does say strangulation, but Deut 22:24 clearly says stoning. I understand that the mishna says strang. is the default if not specified, but here it's specified. This will require more research.

comment Did Mark intend to end his gospel at 16:8?
@user2303, you may have missed that this is not a christian site and we are looking for sound arguments, not emotional appeals about perceived satanic influences (which not everybody here even grants could exist). I've got no skin in the christian-testament-translation fight, so I have no reason to prefer one English translation of that to another. In other words, I might be one of the easiest people for you to convince, but because of the approach you've taken here so far, you've pushed me away instead. If me, then probably others too. Food for thought.

comment Did the Jerusalem Council intend to replace the Torah?
Right, agreed -- Eli makes the argument in his answer that the Noachide laws and the instructions here for gentiles have a lot in common, and that makes sense to me.

comment What analogy is Joel using to compare God's spirit to?
@TimGallant thank you! That connects the dots now, so we can see how you got to where you did. I'm sorry if I'm being a pain; that's not my intent.

Thanks Mike - much better!

@TimGallant thanks, that helps. Would you consider adding that to your answer?

You (or Leithart) make a good argument here. Could I persuade you to tone down the invective in your first couple (non-quote) paragraphs? It feels out of place to me here, more-properly belonging on a pulpit perhaps.

If he meant to preach against earthly things, wouldn't he have talked about wealth, possessions, power, etc? How is marriage, which elsewhere seems to be expected (a man shall leave his father and mother for his wife, and of course procreation is expected to be from within marriage), an "earthly thing"? You've given an opinion here but not really supported it; we're looking for a clear path from the text to a conclusion. Can you edit in some more support for this answer?

The torah doesn't require gentiles to adopt torah to be "saved", but it does require that they keep the laws given to Noah after the flood, so it's not quite a free pass either.

comment Why does John note the name of the servant whose ear was cut off?
@MatthewMiller, it's the 's' I'm wondering about. How is this name spelled in Hebrew (or Aramaic)?

Interesting parallel - thanks!

Malchus means kingship in Ashkenazi-pronounced Hebrew. I wonder whether the Greek word here is the same as the one that corresponds to other uses of melech et al from Hebrew.

comment What analogy is Joel using to compare God's spirit to?
@H3br3wHamm3r81, I meant that if everybody gets this, then it no longer signifies singling someone out for a special role (the original purpose of the anointing). Is this an elevation of everybody to special status, or does anointing no longer mean special status? (Or something else I haven't thought of?)

Thanks for the clarification. I figure we're all here to help each other, so I hope if I say something that seems cryptic or unsupported to you that you'll let me know so I can address it.

@H3br3wHamm3r81 thanks, I forgot about that one. There, the "spirit of grace and supplication" is being poured; more-specific imagery isn't clear to me.

I got lost at "Ezekiel mentions...aspects of the new covenant", since in Ezekiel's (and Joel's) context there is no such thing as a new covenant, only the eternal covenant that God gave Israel at Sinai. So while this provides insight into what Paul might have meant by it, I'm having trouble understanding how it helps with what Joel meant. Can you help me understand?

Hi Tim. Looks like we were nearly-simultaneously answering different interpretations of Kate's question. I hadn't noticed that the title and the body had different foci. Oops.

Thanks for this answer. If anointing oil sets one apart (makes one special, as in the cases you cite), then how do you interpret Joel apparently saying that everybody, even slaves, will receive this pouring-out? Is it a change in meaning, or do you read it as everybody being this special in the future?
