"Exegesis" is usually contrasted with "hermeneutics" in that the former is the practice of interpretation, while the latter is the philosophy of interpretation.

Different faith communities frame different rules or guidelines for interpretation; these may also change across time and regionally. So, for example, very broadly, traditions of interpretation differ in a Jewish context from a Christian one. However, even within faith traditions, very different ways of reading/interpreting scriptural texts may emerge.
