Biblical Hermeneutics Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professors, theologians, and those interested in exegetical analysis of biblical texts. It's 100% free, no registration required.

You all know how Judas sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The thing is he hanged himself before Jesus died on the cross so he went to (supposedly) hell. But after Jesus died on the cross he went to the underworld and preached there. Is it possible that Judas might have been redeemed there, or is it safe to presume that the only ones that Jesus preached to in the underworld were those who hadn't heard the gospel in their lifetime?

I'm really interested in hearing some oppinions about this.

You mean, Judas? Judah is the tribe of Israel. – Richard Oct 31 '11 at 14:24

Also, this question really should go to Christianity.SE, since it's not asking about the biblical text, but about the application of salvation and damnation. – Richard Oct 31 '11 at 14:26

@Amichai: Gotta love Borges! But that's not the best answer I think. ;-) – Jon Ericson Oct 31 '11 at 18:34

The scriptural support for Jesus descending into Hell at all is weak:

We don't want to put words in God's mouth, but the Bible doesn't give us any hope for Judah. In fact, Jesus calls him the one destined for destruction in John 17:12:

While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. ).

In fact, we should safely take it that no one gets a chance at salvation after they die and use this to motivate us to spread the Gospel all the more proudly.

I understand. So it was destined for him to sell Jessus but maybe he could have chosen not to hang himself. I am just wondering if he could have made the choice not to sell Jessus. If this happened then most likely someone else would have sold him but still that someone was supposedly doomed forever? Or he could have repented after he realised what he has done ? (although it says that after jesus told him that he was going to sell him, the devil got into Judas). I know this is not something to fill your head with , but I think this is important because it also has to do with pre-destination. – Fofole Nov 1 '11 at 7:39
