How many more Christian writings, besides those in the New Testament, written during the time between the crucifixion of Christ and the death of the last of the 12 apostles (John) do we know of? What, if any, significance do they have to our understanding of the canonical works?

A good place to start might be the Early Christian Writings site. I don't personally agree with the dates given, but it seems fairly comprehensive in terms of Christian works. – Jon Ericson Sep 19 '12 at 22:37
Also, I mentioned this question in chat. I'm not sure it's a good fit for the site. – Jon Ericson Sep 19 '12 at 22:40
@Jon - I just changed the title back to "How many more Christian writings written between the crucifixion of Christ and the death of the last of the 12 apostles do we know of?". You can close it, but I don't want people to think that I would ever ask such question as "Why are early Christian writings important?", which looks like quite a silly question to me. – brilliant Sep 22 '12 at 6:46
What defines a "Christian writing"? There were all sorts of people in early Church history writing stuff and claiming it was Christian. There was also all sorts of stuff being written during that period in general, some of which we know of but don't actually have, others we have bits of. Sometimes non Christian writings affect our understanding of canonical works too. This question seems either too broad or is fishing for something that you already have in mind, in which case I would just ask about that thing directly. – Caleb Nov 2 '12 at 12:22
@Caleb - Well, in fact, I didn't even know about that while I was asking this question. Well, then let's just follow here the definition of "Christian" as it is put forth on this site: Christian is whatever or whoever claiming to be such. Thus, I am interested in any writings of that time that claim to be Christian. – brilliant Nov 2 '12 at 16:01
